Jonathan Cohen has been playing Electric Bass since 1977. He started playing in bands at the age of 15 with his two brothers Adrian and Jordan, and many friends from high school. He attended Berklee College of Music in the late 80’s with both of his brothers, studying with instructor Joe Santere while there.
Cohen returned to Albany in the early 90’s and was a prominent member of the local music scene for the next 15 years. He worked with many many bands, both commercial and creative, in almost any style of music you can think of. Among those Cohen played with thru the years were Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jim Wieder, Out Of Control Rhythm & Blues, Box Of Rain, Brian Patneaude, Mitch Elrod, Katie Haverley, George Muscatello, Kenny Hoeman and The Weasels just to name a few.
Cohen was named Best Bassist of 2001 by Metroland Magazine, and recorded three albums of original material with his own band The Erftones, featuring saxophonist Brian Patneaude, guitarist Matt Pirog and drummer Chad Ploss among others. Cohen has been teaching bass for almost 30 years and has been associated with Blue Sky Music Studios in Bethlehem NY since the late 90’s.
Jonathan Cohen is also a Piano Technician, serving upstate NY since 1993. Cohen currently services some of the finest pianos in some of the finest venues there are in the area, for some of the finest pianists in the world, working at, among many other places; the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy NY, Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady NY, Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga NY and The Palace Theatre in Albany NY. Cohen previously serviced pianos at the EMPAC Center in Troy NY, the Cohoes Music Hall in Cohoes NY and WAMC Public Radio’s Linda Norris Auditorium in Albany NY. Cohen also worked at Artist Pianos in Latham NY for 20 years, servicing pianos made by Steinway, Yamaha, Kawai and many other manufacturers.
